NHS continuing healthcare

Learn more about NHS funding for people with significant health needs who require extended care.

NHS continuing healthcare (CHC) is a package of care arranged and funded solely by the NHS for individuals who are not in hospital, but who have on-going complex, intense, or unpredictable healthcare needs. You can receive CHC services in any setting, including your own home or a care home.

If you are eligible for CHC, Bristol, North Somerset and South Gloucestershire Integrated Care Board will fund the care required to meet your identified care needs.

These leaflets produced by the Department of Health are guides for individuals who may be in need of ongoing care and support from health and social care professionals as a result of disability, accident or illness. It also explains the process used to determine whether the individual is eligible.

Who is eligible for NHS continuing healthcare?

Eligibility is not dependent on a particular disease, diagnosis or condition, or on who provides the care or where it’s provided. If your overall assessment of care shows that you have a ‘primary health need’, you may be eligible.

Anyone over 18 years old who has been assessed as having a certain level of care need is entitled to NHS continuing healthcare. CHC is free, unlike support provided by Local Authorities where a financial charge may be made depending on a person’s income and savings. Assessments for adults are made according to the Department of Health National Framework.
