Planning application submitted for new Thornbury Health Centre
A planning application has been submitted as part of a project to deliver a new health centre on the former Thornbury Hospital site.
The health centre will provide a new home for Severn View Family Practice and Streamside Surgery, who currently occupy a shared building on land adjacent to the former hospital site.
The health centre would provide a total of 24 consulting rooms, three treatment rooms and two phlebotomy rooms (spaces where blood samples can be taken) for the two surgeries. It would include a joint reception and waiting area and office space for both GP practices, as well as Severnvale Primary Care Network.
Sirona care & health would also have office space and consulting rooms to support community services.
David Jarrett, Chief Delivery Officer at NHS Bristol, North Somerset and South Gloucestershire ICB, said:
“We are pleased to be moving forwards on the development of a brand-new Thornbury Health Centre with the submission of this planning application.
“The proposed surgery would provide a much need improvement on existing facilities, providing a state-of-the-art healthcare facility for local people.”
Cllr Adam Monk, South Gloucestershire Council Cabinet Member for Corporate Resources, said:
“We are pleased the project to deliver improved healthcare facilities for Thornbury is progressing, and that the proposals we are submitting to the planning process now have been subject to helpful discussions with local patients and residents to help us refine them.
“While there are still some key steps to take, making the planning application is an important milestone to support the preparation of a strong business case for the Department of Health to consider next year.”
The application follows public engagement on the proposals, with members of the public and local organisations providing feedback on the building’s access, facilities, layout, parking and more. Further engagement would take place as final building designs are developed.
If given planning approval, the application will be included in a business case to be submitted to the Department for Health and Social care with a final decision expected by March 2025.
In 2023, the Government invited NHS Bristol, North Somerset and South Gloucestershire ICB to develop a business case to unlock £14.4million in funding to deliver the brand-new health centre.
The ICB and South Gloucestershire Council are working together to redevelop the former Thornbury Hospital site.
