Prescription scheme offers extra support for young care leavers
Young people leaving care in Bristol, North Somerset and South Gloucestershire can get free prescriptions thanks to a new scheme launched by the local NHS Integrated Care Board (ICB) working with local councils.
As highlighted during National Care Leavers Week (28 Oct – 3 Nov) young people leaving care at 18 often experience a range of financial challenges, especially without parents to support them, and are more likely to suffer ill-health than others.
The free prescriptions scheme aims to help tackle both issues by supporting young care leavers aged 18-25 to get the medication they need free of charge.
Care leavers who are in full-time education or receiving income support are already able to access free prescriptions, but the new scheme means that those in work are also eligible.
Dr Saras Hosdurga, Designated Doctor for Children in Care and Care Leavers at Bristol, North Somerset and South Gloucestershire ICB, said:
“People often speak of the ‘cliff edge’ faced by young people making the transition from foster care or children’s homes into independent living at the age of 18. Even those who are successful in securing employment often struggle to get by especially without the support of family networks.
“This scheme offers one way in which our health and care system can make a difference, by helping these young people with the cost of their prescriptions and in turn, ensuring they get the medication they need.
“We urge care leavers to apply for the scheme. It’s quick and easy to apply and once you have been approved you will receive a prepayment certificate which can be shown to pharmacists when collecting prescriptions.”
Cabinet member with responsibility for children and young people at South Gloucestershire Council, Councillor Simon Johnson, said:
“I am pleased that our care leavers will now have access to free prescriptions following this important decision.
“We take our role as corporate parents to our care leavers seriously and we are committed to supporting them to reach their full potential as they take the first steps into independent living and adulthood. Free prescriptions will help to take away any financial worries they may have when accessing their prescriptions and will support their health and wellbeing. All of our care leavers must apply for a prepayment certificate which is quick and easy to do, and their Personal Advisors at the council will support them to do this.”
Information about the scheme and an application form, are available on the ICB website.
