BNSSG Integrated Care Board has an exciting opportunity for an academic to support a BNSSG system group with the development of a business case to AWP BNSSG Sequoia.

Details of the project

The aim of the project is to use research methodology to extract patient data from the Rio electronic records system. To sort and analyse that data. Support the evaluation of the impact of the BS3 Neighbourhood Support Service

BNSSG Integrated Care Board has an exciting opportunity for an academic to support a BNSSG system group with both planning and the evaluation of a Test and Learn development project in South Bristol (BS3).

This advert is for a Researcher in Residence to assist with an evaluation of the impact of the BS3 Neighbourhood Support Service. The researcher would be well supported, working alongside Carla Snell (Care & Wellbeing Manager), Amanda Cowey (Lead Sirona Practioner) and Joe Davies (Head of Community Development).

Details of the project

BS3 Neighbourhood Support Service is an innovative and integrative front-line service, bringing care and wellbeing support into the home. Offering person-centered support to people who have recently been discharged home from hospital. Its aim is to ensure people remain safe and well at home and optimise their overall health and wellbeing through support with accessing the community, social opportunities, practical support at home, and other relevant resources and referrals.

The service (a ‘test and learn’ project) is delivered by BS3 Community Development (a VCSE organisation), but it is truly an integrated service due to close collaborative working with Sirona. The concept of the service arose from a series of conversations between BS3 Community Development and Sirona that enabled both to gain a more in-depth understanding of each other’s strengths and challenges, and how they could complement each other’s work. It was within one of these meetings that Sirona raised capacity issues to conduct more holistic care and wellbeing visits to people coming home from hospital on a Pathway 1 – resulting in Sirona having to use agency staff and therefore increasing staff costs. This also resulted in clinicians struggling to address any ‘upstream’ issues a patient may have had and any wider social or wellbeing needs, and home visits being carried out at unsuitable times for the patient. Patients subsequently reported not feeling supported on discharge from Sirona’s services. Since our service began running in April 2024, we have received positive feedback from both patients and from Sirona but feel an in-depth evaluation of the project is necessary, particularly to help us build a business case for this service to continue long term and scale into other areas. The overarching hypothesis we are looking to explore is that we believe this service is helping to build patient resilience and reduces avoidable yo-yoing between hospital and home, as well as reduced reliance on wider health and social care services following engagement/ intervention. But we would also like to explore any other positive outcomes to understand what the impact of this service truly is.

Through our partnership working with Sirona, we can offer access to key data points including patient records on EMIS, ‘Patient Intervention Timelines’ found on Connecting Care, along with our own in-house data that we have been collecting throughout the Test and Learn project. We would be keen to discuss and co-design with the researcher how we best go about evaluating the project’s impact.

Closing date: 28 February 2026

Timelines: The researcher would start as soon as possible.

Please note the available budget for this opportunity is £7,000.
