Information and support to help you prepare for an operation or treatment.
Having an operation is a big life event. Taking steps to improve your health and wellbeing beforehand can help to prepare your body and mind, reduce the risks of the operation, and help you recover faster.
Following a specific health or wellbeing programme can also help you feel more prepared for your upcoming procedure and more in control of your physical and mental health.
Research shows that focusing on certain lifestyle changes in whatever time you have before your operation or treatment can help you cope better and improve your long term health. These lifestyle changes may include:
- Achieving a healthy weight
- Being more physically active
- Taking care of your mental health
- Seeking support to stop smoking
- Reducing your alcohol intake

If you have cancer
What is prehabilitation?
Starting treatment for cancer can be daunting, and you may feel you have little control. But there are things you can do before you start.
These can include making slight changes to your everyday life to help get ready for cancer treatment. This is called prehabilitation, or prehab.
Learn more about preparing for cancer treatment and life after on the Cancer Research UK website.
You can find out more about prehabilitation by watching the Macmillian Cancer Support videos.
Local prehabilitation services
You will have a clinical nurse specialist or/and a cancer support worker who can refer you to prehabilitation services to meet your needs.
